Selling Chicago-style pizza outside of Chicago has always been a challenge.

As someone who grew up near Boston, a city with a grand tradition of thinner-crust pizza offered by chains such as Pizzeria Regina, Papa Gino’s, and Santarpio’s, deep-dish pizza seemed like an entirely different food. It wasn’t something commonly sold during my childhood, and it remains something I’ve never really considered pizza.

Despite that, Uno Pizzeria, which was known as Pizzeria Uno back in the 1980s and 90s, flourished in New England. The chain offered a version of deep-dish pizza that was a take on the Chicago classic, but also closer to traditional pizza.

It was deep-dish, but not quite as deep as what’s traditionally sold under that name. You could eat it with a fork and knife, but you could also pick it up and eat it as a slice.

Uno did not exactly take over New England, but it became a steady presence with dozens of locations across the region. That presence has slowly withered, as the overall chain has shrunk from over 150 locations nationwide to only 36 as of Feb. 3, 2026, according to the locations page on the company’s website.

Now, the chain has suddenly closed three more Massachusetts locations.

3 more Uno Pizzeria locations close

Uno Pizzeria has closed locations in Dedham, Revere, and Braintree, Massachusetts, without any notification to customers, Boston’s WCVB reported.

The chain posted a notice on its Facebook page, which has since been taken down.

“After 34 years of serving this amazing community, our Revere location is closing its doors for the last time on Sunday,” the restaurant posted. “We would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who has made this restaurant feel like home for over three decades. It’s been an unforgettable run!”

These shutdowns leave only five Massachusetts locations listed on the chain’s website. Two locations are listed for New Hampshire, in Concord and Tilton. No Uno restaurants remain in Rhode Island.

Uno did not return a request for comment from the news station.

  • Significant reduction in total units: Uno has been shrinking over the past few years; it closed more than a quarter of its U.S. system in 2024, dropping from around 68 locations to about 53, and continued closures have pushed that count lower in 2025, reported Nation’s Restaurant News (NRN).

Uno is not a public company, but NRN shared details of its sales decline.

“Chicago’s Uno Pizzeria and Grill, founded in 1943, lost nearly 23% of its sales in 2024 to finish with $114.3 million. It also closed more than 26% of its system to end the year with 53 locations,” it shared.

That number has continued to drop, according to the locations page on the company’s website.

Uno struggling with competition

Boston Business Journal’s Grant Welker told CBS News that the chain has struggled for clear reasons.

“So, Uno is running into a problem that’s pretty common with a lot of mid-tier restaurants that are facing a lot of headwinds,” Welker said. “One of them being that there’s a lot more competition for dining dollars, and fast casual is taking a lot of that. It’s places like Chipotle that are really growing, and people like the quick aspect of it. You can order online, pick it up, it’s more affordable entry points.”

Uno is not alone in its struggles. Another pizza chain with deep roots in the Boston area, Bertucci’s, has closed most of its locations after a third bankruptcy filing in seven years. That chain remains under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

“Bertucci’s specifically blamed input costs, waning consumer confidence and worsening economic conditions earlier this year, rather than the longer problems in the casual dining sector, for its bankruptcy filing,” Restaurant Dive reported.

Uno Pizzeria has also been hurt by an overall drop in consumer confidence.

“A big part of what’s happening is consumer confidence and how they feel about their current economic situation,” Technomic Senior Principal David Henkes said, pointing to the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index which shows that consumer confidence levels are at a historic low, Nation’s Restaurant News reported.

“Consumers were more confident in their situations during the pandemic than they are today,” he added.
