While travelers are currently concerned above all with their holiday travels and maybe booking a tropical trip to get away from the ensuing winter blues, airlines are already deep into planning the warmer seasons during which many Americans will book trips to European cities as well as travel more domestically.

Delta Air Lines recently announced plans to launch its first direct flight to Porto (OPO) in northern Portugal from JFK in May 2026 while United Airlines is returning a flashy route to Nuuk International Airport (GOH) in Greenland and increasing frequencies between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Faa’a International Airport (PPT) in Tahiti by summer 2026.

American Airlines, which recently announced its own spate of flights to Europe and South America, is now leaning into a major domestic expansion with 15 new routes set to start between May and June 2026.

American launching new flights to Lincoln, Rapid City, Abilene and Kalispell among others

The biggest number of flights, including one to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) in Montana and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in Alaska, will go from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).

The latter will launch on May 21 and run daily on an Airbus A321neo with room for 220 passengers. As a seasonal route, it will be retired as the weather turns cool on Sept. 8. Other new seasonal destinations from Phoenix include Abilene (ABI) in west-central Texas, Kalispell (FCA) in northwestern Montana, Rapid City (RAP) in South Dakota and Lincoln Airport (LNK) in Nebraska.

Many of these cities have been seeing a growing number of tourists interested in exploring local nature and nearby national parks during the summer months.

A year-round route to McAllen Airport (MFE) in the southernmost point of Texas will also launch on June 4 on an Embraer E175. New destinations from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) include Erie (ERI) in Pennsylvania, the Tri-Cities (TRI) in Tennessee and Lincoln.

The latter city has also been targeted for a larger American presence; on top of the new Phoenix and Chicago routes, a flight between Lincoln and Dallas Fort-Worth (DFW) will also launch on June 4 to run twice daily throughout the year.

Miami will be a host city for the FIFA World Cup during that period and, according to American, has also been tapped for a new route connecting fans from other parts of the country or international visitors looking to go on to other parts of the U.S.

“With new routes from places like Lincoln, Nebraska, Abilene, Texas, Columbia, Missouri and more, we’re providing local residents one-stop access to seal business deals, take a dream vacation with friends or family and enjoy soccer matches on the global stage,” American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning Brian Znotnis said in a statement.
