Many retailers went bankrupt and closed stores in 2025. In fact, according to Coresight Research, retailers vacated 120 million square feet of retail space this year as a result of store closures and bankruptcies.

Some of the stores that have closed include big-name retailers consumers have depended on for years. And, a 77-year-old furniture retailer is now among those stores.

The furniture retailer operates in 17 states. Now, however, it has declared bankruptcy and announced it is closing a number of stores across the U.S, leaving customers in the lurch.

The furniture retailer that filed for bankruptcy and is shutting its doors is American Signature Inc. (ASI). ASI is the parent company of two very well-known furniture retailers:

  • American Signature Furniture
  • Value City Furniture

In total, the company has 120 stores in the 17 states where it operates. Value City is located in more states than American Signature Furniture and has stores in:

  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland

  • North Carolina
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • West Virginia

ASI’s 120 total physical locations represent significantly fewer stores than other major furniture retailers, like La-Z-Boy, which has 2,571 locations, and Mattress Firm, which has 2,373 locations, according to the data company ScrapeHero.

Customers are upset about major furniture chain closing stores

Many customers are upset by this news, including some who have pending furniture purchases or warranties.

In one Facebook thread, for example, a poster commented that they had just purchased a sectional from one of the shuttering stores and were concerned about whether it would be delivered or if they’d get their money back.

Another said, “I wonder what this means for my warranty, I JUST got with my new couch this summer.”

These customers will, unfortunately, have to wait and see how the bankruptcy and store closures play out to determine what happens with their items.

And future customers will find fewer in-person options for furniture shopping as these stores close their doors.
